Patterns, Collages, Puzzles, and other Studies

I like to use things like Sudoku and crossword puzzles and old, discarded Bingo cards as a template for color and compositional experiments which often inform my paintings. They also introduce an element of chance to the work, diminishing my role in its creation.
Usually, the works on paper and collages that I make are a means of working out color ideas for my paintings, or for creating combinations of colors that resonate emotionally with my own memories or nostalgic wanderings. If you have ever painted or drawn you might have had the experience of dropping out of the world of words and time, and being in a state of reverie that eventually completely takes over, and there is no perception of the passage of time. There is a sensation of being in the past, present, and future all at once, and then eventually, as the painting unfolds, there is only color, form, texture and the way these elements all flow together.
